Dear brothers and sisters in Christ
I am attaching both the programs for the Council for World Mission East Asia Region's Inaugural Youth Leaders Regional Assembly and the I LOVE MALAYSIA Programs which will be running consecutively from August 11 to 28, 2008, for your perusal. The theme for the conference is "The Role of the Christian Youth in Nation Building".
Gereja Presbyterian Malaysia (GPM) is the main organiser for these two events and will play hosts to youth leaders from various member churches in East Asia, i.e. from Taiwan, Hong Kong, Myanmar, Singapore, South Korea as well as representatives from Africa, Europe and Caribbean.
On behalf of the organisers, I would like to extend an invitation to yourselves and fellow ecumenical youth leaders to participate in these 2 programs. Participants for the extended I LOVE MALAYSIA will get to experience a short term mission exposure during their stay with another Malaysian church, serving in various ministries such as mission, e.g. Orang Asli children, sunday school or migrants, or youth work, and also get to enjoy an enriching cross cultural experience from their time of fellowship and sharing with regional youth leaders on matters relating to regional affairs and development of national youth policies.
Please do not hesitate to contact me for further clarification.

Special Tribute Service In Honor of David Boler

SPECIAL TRIBUTE SERVICE - Mr David Boler
Date: 29 June 2008 (Sunday)
Time: 8.00pm
Venue: Petaling Jaya Gospel Hall, Jln Gasing
"Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his saints"
Psalm 116:15
From NECF in 2002: "For many years, the highly-regarded 83-year-old patriarch of the Malaysian Evangelical community has been relentlessly calling Evangelicals to “forget our differences and emphasise what we have in common.”
He said unity in the Church was critical to establish “the credibility and uniqueness
of Jesus as the One sent from and by God ‘to be the Saviour of the world’ and ‘as an
atoning sacrifice for our sins.’” Unity is, therefore, the evidence that “He (God) loved us” (1 John 4:9-14).
Mr Boler urged Christians to make every effort to preserve the unity – which we already have in the Spirit – by being humble, gentle, patient and gracious with
one another according to Ephesians 4:1–16. Our effort on unity is also evidence that
we are committed to renewal in the Church.
He concluded his message with his oft-given counsel: “The important working
principle to follow is that Christians emphasise and act on what they have in
common, never on distinctives that may divide. Only then can the Malaysian Church
establish a credible witness among the multi-religious people of Malaysia.”

Now That's A Good Question!
It's always fun to do Question & Answer forums. Also scary as I'm not quick on my feet. Community Baptist Church Sunway kindly invited me again to address the youth group on a low key Friday night (30 May 08) along with two other panelists Elder Beng Tiong and MBS valedictorian Ps Alexa. (nice to catch up with Gary and of course, baby Micah!)The thing about such forums though is that only soundbytes get through. Try answering the problem of evil or the meaning of life less than 2 minutes. There's so much you wanna say but due to time limit, you could only cover the bare essentials. And there's also the audience of some late secondary schoolers and college students, how do you keep em awake? I didn't get to say half of these prepared notes, so for what it's worth, I decided to share the 'contoh jawapan' here.
Here are some questions that get thrown out, and if you find other ways to answer them, do leave me a comment ok?

Passion: Kuala Lumpur

Vision: PASSION KUALA LUMPUR is a gathering for UNIVERSITY-AGED young people throughout Malaysia and South-east Asia. Believing in the university moment, and what God longs to do in this strategic window of time, the entire event will focus on the bigness of God, calling students to PRAYER, WORSHIP and ACTION, and a Story so much bigger than their own.
The heartbeat of PASSION KUALA LUMPUR is to:
ENCOURAGE the CHURCH
Foster UNITY among those who love JESUS
Spark VISION for the UNIVERSITIES of Kuala Lumpur and the nation
Tell the STORY of REDEMPTION in compelling ways
INSPIRE students to EMBRACE their part in God's global plan for the NATIONS
Why the World?
Finding in Christ all we need, and spending our lives to make Him famous in this generation... that's what The Passion Movement is all about and what has attracted hundreds of thousands of university aged young people to Passion gatherings over the past eleven years. Passion is more than an event. Passion is a movement made up of young people who have abandoned the idea of living simply for themselves and are daily giving everything so the world can see Jesus more clearly. Passion is about the glory of God, inspiring a wave of students to taste and see that He is good and to do something now to change the world in Jesus' name. We've discovered that every major city in the world is a university town, most home to hundreds of thousands, and in some cases millions of students. So, Passion is off on a crazy journey to the cities of the world in 2008, uniting university students around the globe in a story so much bigger than our own. Click on the city nearest you and join the movement for His renown!"Yes Lord, walking in the way of Your truth we wait eagerly for You, for Your name and renown are the desire of our souls." Isaiah 26:8
268 Declaration:
"Yes, Lord, walking in the way of Your Truth,
we wait eagerly for You,
for Your name and Your renown
are the desire of our souls."
Isaiah 26:8
I desire that my life be a part of a generation that lives
for the glory of Your name. (Psalm 86:11-12)
My desire is reflected by the following statements and prayers:
Because I was created by God and for His glory, I will magnify Him as I respond to His great love. My desire is to make knowing and enjoying God the passionate pursuit of my life.
[God, give me a desire for You like the desire that You have for me.]
Colossians 1:16-18, John 17:3, Revelation 3:20, Philippians 3:7-10, Jeremiah 9:23-24, Psalm 73:25-28, Psalm 16:11, Isaiah 43:7
Because Christ established the Church for God's glory, I desire to magnify God as I use the gifts He has given me to serve and build up the local church. I will pray for continued renewal in my church through the work and power of the Holy Spirit.
[God, renew in me a love for Your Church, the Body of Christ.]
Ephesians 3:20,21, 4:1-13, 5:25-27, Hebrews 10:23-25, Acts 2:41-47
Because God is glorified greatly when believers love each other, I desire to magnify Him as I humbly yield to and pray towards unity among all Christians on my campus. [God, give me a desire to lift up Your name above all other names.]
John 17:20-26, John 13:34-35, 1 Corinthians 3, Psalm 133:1, Colossians 3:12-17
Because many on my campus are hopelessly separated from God, I desire to magnify Him by sharing the life and love of Jesus where I live. As I share, I will earnestly pray for revival on my campus and in my world.
[God, break my heart for those with whom I live.]
Romans 10:11-15, Isaiah 6:1-8, 62:6-7, Matthew 5:13-16, 1 Peter 2:9-12, Philippians 2:12-16, 1 John 5:14-15
Because God is seeking worshipers of all peoples, I desire to magnify Him among the nations. I actively commit my life and energy to participation in His global purposes in my generation.
[God, kindle in me the desire to go anywhere, at anytime, at any cost, to do anything to proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ.]
Psalm 86:9, 2 Corinthians 5:18-21, Isaiah 49:6, Revelation 5:9-14, Matthew 28:18-20, Psalm 67, Acts 1:8
Attend: This gathering is for University students, people aged 18-25, and their ministry leaders.
The cost is 20 RM ($6.50 USD).
PASSION KUALA LUMPUR August 3rd 2008
6:00PM-10:00PM Main Session
Location: Sunway Convention Center, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
Who: Chris Tomlin, Louie Giglio, Charlie Hall
Volunteer: In order to make these events happen, we will need volunteers who are willing to serve throughout the whole conference in various jobs. We are requiring that all volunteers be 25 years of age or older. Anyone under the age of 25 CANNOT volunteer. The reason for this is that we want students to be able to fully connect with all of the experiences at the conference. Volunteers do not pay to attend and are typically working hard behind the scenes during every part of the day serving the students attending the conference. Accordingly, we require that all volunteers be 25 years of age or older.

Amazing Grace: Reflections On The Life Of Wilberforce
I've watched the movie twice already, but still find it inspiring especially when watching together with about 80+ friends, brothers and sisters at Community Baptist Church. It was also the final wrap-up discussion of the Total Truth group. Look forward to the day a Malaysian movie maker do a commentary or movie on Tan Sri Tan Chee Koon :D
Some brief comments from my post-movie sharing. Social justice is a marathon, not a 10 second sprint or 100 metre dash. Wilberforce suffered 20 years of defeat, discouragement and even death threat for his struggle before slavery was finally abolished 3 days before his death. Winning an election in 2 weeks is just the beginning...
The life of Wilberforce reminds us the need for more full time Christians in the world (and more fulltime workers in the church) to make a difference where they are. When Wilberforce was 25 years old, he has a spiritual transformation so dramatic that he considered quitting politics to be a priest. As depicted in the movie, a wise mentor in the form of John Newton (ex slave trader and famous hymn writer of "Amazing Grace") counselled against a career change.
Thirdly social justice is a community project, not a solo effort. Burnout is a constant danger. The scene of Hannah, Clarkson, Equiano etc sharing a meal together ("We humbly suggest that you can do both (serving God and being a political activist)") shows how different people bring their unique skills, contributions (look for evidence, write books, look for loopholes in the legislation etc)
Although not a part of the movie, Wilberforce has a group of friends who meet up regularly for prayer and worship called the Clapham Sect. They share evangelical Christian faith, long term commitment to social cause and lifelong friendship. Together they worked hard for missions, translating the bible, improve working conditions for the poor in manufacturing industry, agricultural reform to supply affordable food, prevent animal cruelty (RSCPA), prison reform, improve child labor conditions, freedom of religion, education and oppose blood sport/duels etc.
You can't do all of that on your own, we need the power of community. Imagine if every cell group in our churches just choose ONE cause of mercy or justice and commit long term to it!
Finally, there's a scene in the movie where Wilberforce asked his affluent MP friends to "remember the Madagascar (a slave ship that reeks of the stench of death). Remember that God created man equal". The theological conviction behind his activism is that every human being regardless of race is created in God's image and therefore has inherent dignity and worth. Especially relevant in Msia where race relations have been so politicised, and the church needs to work for racial reconciliation.

Stewardship: Time Management
Spiritual Formation Institute Seminar 2008/1
Life Stewardship – A Biblical and Practical Approach to Time Management
Speaker: Rev Dr Tan Soo Inn
Date: 2.00pm- 9.30pm, Saturday 3 May 2008
Place: Berea, Holy Light Church, Johor Bahru
Synopsis:
One of the most prevalent realities of modern life is the time crunch --- most of us are overwhelmed by the fact that we have so much to do and not enough time to do it all.
But God calls us to be good stewards of our time; He calls us to manage our time well and direct our energy into right priorities. God also calls us to be faithful in all the key roles He has placed in our lives, and to remember to take time to rest. Achieving all these things is not possible if we forget that God is our Father, and that nurturing a deep and intimate relationship with Him is the bedrock on which all other priorities should be built upon, no matter how pressing the expectations of the world might be.
This seminar will explain how we can manage our time responsibly by emphasising the need for us to balance the various roles in our lives, and will highlight the importance of learning to make resting a priority in our lives.
Instead of focusing on "what am I supposed to do" the seminar asks the more fundamental question of "who am I" and suggests that it is in returning to our primary identity as "child of God" that we find a way to live a life that is full but fulfilled.
Topics to be covered:
1. The time crunch as a spiritual problem
2. Step one – Returning to the Fatherhood of God
3. Step two – Recognizing and Embracing your Key Roles
4. Step three – Respecting the Place of Rest
5. An Approach in Practice
About the Speaker:
Soo Inn is a director of Graceworks, a ministry committed to promoting spiritual friendship in church and society. He runs this ministry in partnership with his wife, Bernice. He also serves as honourary associate pastor of Evangel Christian Church, Singapore.
Bernice and Soo Inn have four sons. Soo Inn has a BDS from the University of Singapore, a ThM from Regent College and a DMin from Fuller.
His primary passions include connecting the Word of God to the struggles of daily life, and the promotion of the discipline of spiritual friendship.
He has been a supporter of Arsenal Foot Ball Club since 1971 and his favourite movie is Star wars 4.

The Prophecy of Isaiah
Course Description: In the book of Isaiah God revealed His plan for Israel and the world from the 8th century BC to the coming of Christ and the creation of the new heavens and new earth. He also assured the completion of this plan by demonstrating His control over history. Luke and Acts is an account of the fulfillment of Isaiah 40-55. Hence without Isaiah we may misunderstand Christian salvation and mission.
By studying Isaiah in its historical, literary and theological contexts this course seeks to make plain the meaning of the prophecies, which are mostly expressed in poetry. Thus much attention is given to how to interpret poetic prophecies. The prophetic books of Jeremiah, Ezekiel and Daniel will also be briefly considered in order to present God's plan for world redemption more completely.

Justification in Paul’s Epistles
A world class scholar will be in Malaysia, sharing on a burning issue "justification by faith" that Luther claims is the article of faith on which the church either stands or falls...
Course: Justification in Paul’s Epistles
Lecturer: Dr. Peter O’Brien
Description: Justification is the doctrine where a sinner is declared righteous before God on the basis of the righteousness of Christ and his atoning work on the Cross. This course will explore the development and presentation of justification in the letters written by the Apostle Paul. In view of recent scholastic studies that offer a “fresh interpretation” of the doctrine of justification, this course will be a timely reminder of the biblical view of how God justifies us while we were still enemies with Him.
Dates: 1 Mar (Sat), 4 Mar (Tue), 6 Mar (Thu), 8 Mar (Sat), 11 Mar (Tue), 13 Mar (Thu) & 14 Mar (Fri)
Time: Weekday classes meet from 8.00 pm to 10.30 pm. Weekend classes meet from 9.00 am to 5.00 pm
Location: First Baptist Church, Lot 8 Jalan Pantai 9/7, Petaling Jaya, 46000 Selangor

Thinking Theologically Conference
SIN is something that is rarely talked about in, to some it's a taboo word, and yet, it's the issue that affects all of us so greatly. let's come and learn to read the Bible and understand, what it has to say about sin in our lives.
TTC 2008 brings Christians like yourself and others together to think through this theological issue under God's Word. It promises to be 3 days of warm fellowship, good food, thoughtful prayer, and an equipping of the mind for faithful ministry.
Speaker: Rev Dr Andrew Cheah, a graduate of Moore Theological College and has served at St. Mary’s since 2003.
The organisers are: The Gospel Growth Fellowship ...is a fellowship committed to glorifying God through the growth of Gospel-centred evangelical Christianity in the local church. We believe Christians should be passionate about the Gospel of Jesus Christ (Romans 1:1-6) and make it central in
life, thought and ministry.
We therefore serve the local church in several ways:
Building its members up in a Gospel-centred biblical literacy: faithful to the text, theologically sound and interpreted accurately in Christ.
Equipping members of the local church with the skills and thinking necessary for doing Gospel-centred word ministry.
Encouraging Christians to be committed to Gospel-centred service and leadership of the church.
Fostering mutual support amongst fellow-workers in Christ for perseverance in
Gospel-centred ministry.

Wilberforce's Dilemma
What is the Agora Penang up to this year (2008)? It all began here in-between Christmas and New Year... Then one of us saw the movie... So we thought, WHY NOT?!
Coz we can learn a lot from Mr. Wilberforce, such as his life story...
...and his convictions: "Wilberforce, having converted into evangelicalism was seriously contemplating about what we’ll say as “giving up his job to go into fulltime ministry”, i.e. leaving politics to go into pastoral ministry. One of his Clapham saints, a lady, told him in a very sure tone, “We humbly suggest that you can do both”.
Do stay tune for further details on our first meeting which will be a movie screening (Amazing Grace - the story of William Wilberforce) to be held sometime after Chinese New Year. But till then, we covet your prayers and well wishes.

Religious Liberty Under Threat
KAIROS PUBLIC FORUM: Religious Liberty Under Threat
Time/date: 8.30pm, Thu 31 January 2008
Venue: Heritage Centre, Petaling Jaya
Speakers: Dr Ng Kam Weng & Mr Lim Heng Seng
Malaysian citizens - Malaysian Christians in particular - should be greatly disturbed by recent events that give alarming evidence of the erosion of religious liberty in the country. These events include civil court judgments that advise non-Muslims to go the shariah courts to settle matters of divorce and child custody, the demolition of temples and churches, and the seizures of Sunday School materials and Christian story books for children from bookshops. Of great concern is the Cabinet
announcement that non-Muslims may not use the word 'Allah'. This prohibition would ban Holy Scriptures (Alkitab) and forbid Christians from using well established liturgy, hymns and prayers in their worship services.
Are these events merely ad-hoc actions by the authorities or do they reflect the implementation of a more fundamental Islamic policy that informs and guides the authorities in their treatment of peoples of other faiths? How should Christians view these developments? This public forum will provide an analysis of current trends in our nation and explore how Christians may firmly and constructively respond to these challenges that threaten religious liberty in general and the Christian faith in particular. (*** Admission free ***)
About the speakers
Dr Ng Kam Weng is Research Director of Kairos Research Centre.
Mr Lim Heng Seng, a former senior federal counsel and chairman of the
industrial court, is currently a partner in a law firm in Kuala Lumpur.
